Der Prozess dauert sechs bis acht Tage – bei großen Meilern auch mehrere Wochen, während der Köhler darauf achten muss, durch Regelung des Windzugs (durch Aufstechen und Wiederverschließen von kleinen Löchern) den Meiler weder erlöschen noch in hellen Flammen aufgehen zu lassen. Am aus dem Meiler austretenden Rauch konnte der Köhler den Status des Verkohlungsprozesses erkennen. War der Rauch dick und grau, war das Holz noch roh; dünner, blauer Rauch zeigte eine gute Verkohlung an.
