1951 the Soviet Union started the construction of the artificial island Qum Adasi, to dril and explore oil from the Caspian Sea in front of Azerbaijanian capital Baku. The 53 pump and drilling plattforms are connected by 17 km of artificial bridges and the most of them are still operating.
